In simulation the real and its image become mutually reversible reflections

Evidence

Perhaps only in the mirror can the question be posed: which, the real or the image, is the reflection of the other? In this sense one can speak of the remainder as a mirror, or of the mirror of the remainder. It is that in both cases the line of structural demarcation, the line of the sharing of meaning, has become a wavering one, it is that meaning (most literally: the possibility of going from one point to another according to a vector determined by the respective position of the terms) no longer exists. There is no longer a respective position - the real disappearing to make room for an image, more real than the real, and conversely - the remainder disappearing from the assigned location to resurface inside out, in what it was the remainder of, etc. — Jean Baudrillard, Simulacra and Simulation, 469

  • XREF: Directly extends Baudrillard’s core thesis of the hyperreal image ‘more real than the real’ — connects to Jameson’s treatment of pastiche and the postmodern image. — connects to: Simulation substitutes signs of the real for the real itself — Jean Baudrillard, Simulacra and Simulation, 9; Simulation produces real symptoms and threatens the true-false distinction — Jean Baudrillard, Simulacra and Simulation, 10; Production’s hidden purpose is restoring the real through hyperreal resemblance — Jean Baudrillard, Simulacra and Simulation, 85 (+10 more)
  • DEEPTHINKING: The mirror-of-the-remainder structure — where meaning itself dissolves because positions are no longer stable — is a dense formulation of the collapse of binary logic that underlies all of Baudrillard.
