In-ear headphone performance data is scarce due to measurement challenges.

Evidence

It is important to remember that this study does not include the ear canal. The results are not relevant to measurements of IE headphones where the pinna and head are bypassed, and the ear canal acoustics are the dominant factor. Studies of human ear canals and their objective and subjective effects on IE headphone performance are not readily available because of the methodological challenges and invasiveness of measuring signals at the human ear drum. — Toole, Floyd E, Sound reproduction- the acoustics and…, 1741
