Immersive multimedia events transformed ordinary auditoriums into new kinds of spaces
Evidence
Although not apparent then, Caterpillar Changes was Rubin’s graduation. The mise-en-scène even reminded some of a high school prom. Colored streamers and blue tinsel festooned the lobby. The filmmaker Matt Hoffman, one of the few to write about the event, found the Cinematheque foyer transformed into “a new kind of space—difficult, labyrinthine, challenging, bemusing.” It reminded him of a jungle or carnival. Some nights, the auditorium featured a spun fiberglass screen that curved back from the stage to form a canopy over the audience. — J. Hoberman, Everything Is Now, 964
