Immediacy style deliberately subordinates narrative to transitive experience.
Evidence
Aesthetically this work aimed “to replicate the feel of war, the chaos of war, the messiness of war”; the documentary aesthetic includes an episodic structure that minimizes narrative. As engrossing as it is unpredictable, the resulting immediacy fulfills Bigelow’s wish: “My intention was to put the audience into the soldiers’ shoes, into the Humvee, and almost ask them to be the fourth man on the team and have them experience what those soldiers experience.” The goal of the style and technique is experience propagating. — Anna Kornbluh, Immediacy, or The Style of Too Late…, 219
Categorization
- DEFINE: The passage epigrammatizes immediacy as foreclosing mediation in favor of shared experience — a core definitional touchstone.
- XREF: Directly names the transitivity/experience form that drives Kornbluh’s whole critique and links to Jameson’s primacy-of-experience reading of postmodern textuality.
