Ill-equipped volunteer rebels lost to professional armies in mountain sieges
Evidence
The main body of the Moriscos (estimates vary, 11,000–22,000) simply retreated higher up the mountains, where in the midwinter they were easily starved into surrender, and the miserable remnant was escorted to the coast. The debacle is hardly surprising; ill-equipped untrained volunteers were pitted against well-trained, wellsupplied, well-led professionals. — L. P. Harvey, Muslims in Spain, 1500 to 1614, 1459
