Identity logic grounded in exchange society constrains the thinking subject

Evidence

It is the law of identity which establishes the norms for all thought and action in developed exchange society. The very rationality which this identity embodies, ‘unconscious like the transcendental subject and establishing identity by [exchange], remains incommensurable with the subjects it reduces to the same denominator: the subject as the subject’s foe’. Consequently, Adorno defines theory as critical self-reflection on the part of the subject, without which it suffers from a ‘constriction of … abundance’ of mental experience. — Dirk Braunstein, Adorno’s Critique of Political Economy, 1227
