Hunkanrin’s anticolonialism attacked administration means, not French colonization’s ends.
Evidence
Like Diagne, he accepted the basic values and goals of French colonization; his quarrel with the Government General was therefore over means, not ends. Hunkanrin believed that the local administration was flouting the tenets of the mission civilisatrice, when it refused to extend French education, automatic citizenship, and the rule of French law to all West Africans. These ideas were sufficient to antagonize the Government General, not least because of Hunkanrin’s influence upon his fellow evolues. — Alice L. Conklin, A Mission to Civilize_ The Republican…, 558

- XREF: Deepens the distinction between reformist anticolonialism (means) and revolutionary anticolonialism (ends) — useful contrast to later independence movements.
