Horkheimer halted the SPSS because the journal itself had become a fatal concession

Evidence

The first results of these studies, it was planned, would be published in a yearbook, since the SPSS was to cease publication with the delayed appearance of the issue on Nazism. The entry of the United States into the war and financial considerations were only additional factors in this decision. The basic reason was that Horkheimer had become convinced that in its current form the journal constituted a concession, and no longer corresponded at all to what had been intended. — Rolf Wiggershaus, The Frankfurt School, 321
