Horkheimer blocked Habermas’s Habilitation, forcing him to publish elsewhere.
Evidence
Horkheimer, then, who had been living next door to Pollock in Montagnola above Lake Lugano in Switzerland since 1958, and who had received the freedom of the City of Frankfurt in 1960, prevented Habermas from taking his Habilitation in Frankfurt. Habermas’s study of Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere was published in Darmstadt by Luchterhand instead of in Frankfurt. This, too, contained no mention of the Institute of Social Research. It was even more successful than Students and Politics. — Rolf Wiggershaus, The Frankfurt School, 2383
