Horkheimer’s university rectorship starved the refounded Institute of his leadership

Evidence

The re-established Institute of Social Research had hardly begun its work when it lost its real members of staff. Horkheimer’s election as rector of Frankfurt University, and his re-election a year later, meant that he had scarcely any time for the Institute alongside his teaching and rectoral duties. Adorno, who himself was under an additional workload as a result of his collaboration on the Darmstadt community studies, although he had a lower teaching load than Horkheimer, took over much of Horkheimer’s work and devoted himself to the Institute intensively. — Rolf Wiggershaus, The Frankfurt School, 480
