Hopi villages refuse utility lines to prevent corporate land takings
Evidence
Many Hopi have resisted electrification by utilities, and one-third do not allow electric power lines in their communities. The Hopi traditionals “don’t allow power lines into the villages, because [then] the utilities will have right of way” onto Hopi land, Tewa explains. Village leaders “think that if we don’t pay the bills, [the utilities will] take even more land.” — Winona LaDuke, All Our Relations, 929
