Hopeless Morisco rebels still gathered by the thousands to resist deportation
Evidence
In the case of the revolt centered on Muela de Cortes, there had been preparatory propaganda by one Pablillo Ubcar (presumably a local form of the name Abu Bakr), but the “king” actually elected was Vicente Turixi, who set about collecting supplies, for men did come in large numbers, certainly in thousands. In the barren terrain they were occupying, and in the winter months (November 1609 onward) there was no question of living off what was available in the immediate area. In the forays carried out, cattle and grain were lifted. Fonseca, another Christian source (Fonseca 1612, 236–48), from his ecclesiastical viewpoint, in his account speaks of atrocities against churches and clergy. There seems no reason to dismiss these reports as fabrications. — L. P. Harvey, Muslims in Spain, 1500 to 1614, 1457
