Homogeneous jury composition was blamed for the Zimmerman acquittal
Evidence
In the infamous Trayvon Martin case, George Zimmerman was accused of killing Martin, a Black teenager who was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt (Alvarez & Buckley, 2013). Although Zimmerman admitted to shooting the teenager, he claimed self-defense under Florida’s stand-your-ground law (Justifiable Use of Force, 2005). An all-female jury with only one non-White member eventually acquitted Zimmerman of murder. The controversial outcome of this trial has been linked in the media to the composition of the jury that tried Zimmerman (e.g., Ferguson, 2013). — Joseph Avery, Jim Sidanius, Joel Cooper, Gregory Davis, Amanda N., Bias in the Law, 836
