Home theater RT targets demand costly low-frequency absorbers yet ignore the resonance problem.

Evidence

    1. Dolby makes no requirements for facilities for Atmos mixing, although they mention BS.1116 for “guidance and insight”. The CEDIA/CTA recommendation followed the lead of BS.1116 for custom home theaters. These systems are designed to sound good, distinctive, and to impress, so low RT recommendations are not surprising. That said, the “optimum area” RT recommendation is about 0.2 s to 0.3 s maintained down to the 31.5 Hz octave band, the lowest frequency of which is 22 Hz. This requires expensive low-frequency absorbers, but the real problem, resonances, has other solutions (see Chapter 14). — Toole, Floyd E, Sound reproduction- the acoustics and…, 1238
