Hindu law permitted corporal correction only on the back, never in anger
Evidence
The student shall serve the guru until the guru releases him. The student shall obey the guru. The guru may correct the student for failure of ritual obligation, failure of textual memorization, or failure of operational obedience. The guru may use the raśmi (rope) or the veṇu (bamboo cane), but only on the back — never on the head, the face, the abdomen, or the vital parts. The guru shall not administer correction in anger. — , The Rod and the Child, 3768
