High-frame-rate film technology strives for immersive realism yet failed commercially.
Evidence
In 2012 Peter Jackson filmed The Hobbit at forty-eight frames per second, presenting himself as avant garde, but theaters were not properly equipped, and audiences did not react well. The race for higher frame rate smacks of immediacy; as a star in the film noted of the speed: “It’s so immersive … It has a level of reality that is unsurpassed.” … In 2016 Ang Lee released two films shot at 120 frames per second, both of which bombed at the box office (while only fourteen theaters nationwide could actually screen them at that rate) and were panned for their “video game look.” — Anna Kornbluh, Immediacy, or The Style of Too Late…, 565
