Hidden manuscript hoards reveal what clandestine Spanish Muslims read

Evidence

In some cases, the written evidence was preserved alongside the rest of the dossier and so is still available to us now. This is by no means the only category of evidence that has survived to tell us about the written word as it was still cultivated among Muslims in Spain in the final underground period of their history. From the hiding places where they were secreted by their Morisco owners long ago, under floorboards or behind false walls, a sufficiently large number of manuscript books from a sufficiently diverse range of hiding places and other sources has now emerged for us to form a clear idea of the nature of their literature. — L. P. Harvey, Muslims in Spain, 1500 to 1614, 593
