Herodotus’s warrior triad was a deliberate flattening of richer Persian education.

Evidence

What is Greek — what is selectively chosen by Herodotus — is the flatness of the description. Three things only. As if that were the entire content of what a Persian boy learned from age five to age twenty. It was not. The Pahlavi sources we have, indirectly, describe much more — moral philosophy, religious cosmology, household management, courtly etiquette, agricultural and craft knowledge for the children of nobility, and — what concerns this episode tonight — substantial pedagogical content about how a Persian father should treat his Persian son. — , The Rod and the Child, 1105
