Headphone bass boosts may compensate for missing haptic sensation from loudspeakers
Evidence
The flat target for binaural audio agrees at least two other studies by Møller et al. (1996) and Pralong and Carlile (1996). However, in recent discussions with two spatial audio researchers they preferred a prefer binaural target that had a bass shelf boost like a loudspeaker in a room. The bass boost may also compensate for the missing 3 dB due to missing haptic information when moving from loudspeaker to headphone listening (see Section 15.1.4). — Toole, Floyd E, Sound reproduction- the acoustics and…, 1863

- QUESTION: The 3 dB haptic-info compensation claim is intriguing — is there a measured basis or is it heuristic?
