Habit’s reversible soul-body translation constitutes the Self and awakens consciousness.
Evidence
In constructing the mechanism that allows man to liberate himself from a phantasmatic relation to referentiality, repetition and exercise play an important part. In so far as the influence of habit causes a translation of soul into body and body into soul, these two will form a unity-in-separation, an absolute union without fusion, a union which forms, by its selfreferentiality, the structure of speculative meaning. Between container and contained, a reversible relation abolishes the partition between exterior and interior, allowing soul – henceforth constituted as a ‘Self’ – to relate to the world, the real externality. From here the next step is the awakening of consciousness. The actual soul, ‘with its sensation and its concrete selffeeling turned into habit’, enters into relationship with the ‘world external to it, but in such a way that in the world, it is immediately reflected into itself – consciousness’. — Catherine Malabou, The Future of Hegel, 573
Categorization
- DEFINE: Core definitional passage: plasticity as unity-in-separation (union without fusion), self-referential structure of speculative meaning, habit as awakening consciousness by enabling reflection-into-self amid externality.
- XREF: This is the precise Hegelian mechanism the reader needs for her brain work — embodied plasticity generating a Self that relates to the world while reflected into itself; echoes how neural habit-plasticity scaffolds consciousness. — connects to: Habit-based reversible translation of soul and body grounds the Self’s relation to the world — Catherine Malabou, The Future of Hegel: Plasticity,…, 573; Soul’s withdrawal into habitual unconsciousness enables consciousness to emerge — Catherine Malabou, The Future of Hegel: Plasticity,…, 575; Habit transforms contingent acts into essential determinations of being. — Catherine Malabou, The Future of Hegel: Plasticity,…, 601 (+8 more)
- DEEPTHINKING: Unity-in-separation as the structure of speculative meaning — reversible relation abolishing interior/exterior partition while constituting the Self — is a dense, paradigm-level formulation worth sitting with.
