Granadan deportees reinforced Hornachosās existing Morisco settlement
Evidence
Hornachos received in 1571 displaced Moriscos from areas in the Kingdom of Granada, but we do not know how many in all. Approximately 5,000 (GonzĀ“alez Rodr“ıguez 1990, 64) were moved out of the Sierra de Ronda and the area around Malaga, and after a march via Antequera, entered Extremadura and were sent on to Medell“ın. The road lay close by or through Hornachos, but probably the displaced Moriscos would still have had to go on to Medell“ın, where allocations were made to the various towns and villages. In other parts of Spain, the Granadan Moriscos came to constitute a large proportion of the Moriscos in any area, and because of their cohesive group spirit, they were perceived by the Christians as particularly difļ¬cult to deal with. In Hornachos, the existing Morisco settlement was already causing difļ¬culties. And there was no Christian population of any consequence. The deportation to Hornachos of people from the Ronda region simply brought together two groups of dangerous malcontents. ā L. P. Harvey, Muslims in Spain, 1500 to 1614, 1702
