Evidence
Masjid, “mosque,” is, of course, not in any normal usage to be interpreted as “Church,” but from the days of Talavera and of Pedro de Alcal´a onward in Granada Christian usage had sought to appropriate to itself what elsewhere were, and are, specifically Islamic terms. — L. P. Harvey, Muslims in Spain, 1500 to 1614, 1804
