Granada conversions started with elches then spread to trigger revolt.

Evidence

Although the chronology of the conversions was already known in its general lines, we now have much more exact information, for we can see that although the official date of the beginning was November 1, in reality nothing is recorded before the 20th, and the conversions began with those of the elches. They were the primary and declared object of Cisneros’ campaign, and to their number were then added small groups of Muslims not of elche status, just enough of them to awaken the atmosphere of anxiety that led to the revolt that broke out on December 18 (the feast of Our Lady of the O). — L. Categorization

  • DEFINE: ‘Elches’ appears to name a specific legal/social category of Muslims Cisneros targeted first; worth clarifying exactly who they were.
  • QUESTION: Who exactly were the elches — a distinct legal status among Granada’s Muslims, and why were they the primary target before the general population?
