Granada’s conquest guaranteed religious freedom but conversion came later
Evidence
This is the voice of somebody who had lived through all the vicissitudes that the Granadans had experienced thus far. His 1567 memorial is almost the last that we hear of him, and perhaps at his age he felt he had little to gain by mincing his words. The Pragmatic that Deza was seeking to enforce rested on the assumption that when the Granadans had converted originally, they agreed to the condition that they were to abandon such things as their Granadan style of clothing (en el tiempo que los dichos naturales deste reyno se convirtieron a nuestra sancta fe cath´olica, asentaron que au´ıan de mudar el ´abito… . [Garrad 1954, 204]). This assumption the old gentleman roundly denies: “I do not believe that anybody in this kingdom has any memory of such a pact or agreement. There was no such thing, and I do not believe that any written record of it will be found, for the conversion of those native to this kingdom was by force, and against what had been agreed to by the Catholic Monarchs in the Capitulations with King Boabdil (Rey Muley Boabdili)… that they were to remain in their religion, and with their mosques, judges, muftis, and that they were not to be converted to Christianity.” — L. P. Harvey, Muslims in Spain, 1500 to 1614, 1000 (
