Global food output exceeds need yet hunger coexists with massive waste.

Evidence

Let’s go back to that sandwich. Enough food is produced daily to feed everyone on the planet, yet over 800 million people suffer from hunger. The problem of global hunger has actually worsened in recent years and in 2024 accounted for 45 percent of child deaths worldwide. In developed countries, food insecurity is growing. In the US alone, 13.5 percent of households were food insecure in 2023. However, about one-third of the food produced (1.3 billion tons, with an approximate value of $1 trillion) goes to waste every year because it remains unsold and is thrown away. That much food could feed three billion people. To catch a glimpse of this global reality, it’s enough to go to the local supermarket at closing hours: products at or near expiration are discarded. The point is to sell them, not to feed people. — Clara E. Mattei, Escape from Capitalism, 56
