Gezi protesters were disproportionately affluent and educated professionals

Evidence

Surveys indicated that most people in the square were far more educated than Turks as a whole and came from well-off neighborhoods nearby (while farmers, housewives, and shopkeepers were less likely to support the occupation). The professionals were united, very loosely, in defense of secular values, in opposition to the commodification of public space, and in solidarity against police violence. — Vincent Bevins, If We Burn, 344
