George Wallace’s 1968 New York rally drew fascist groups and violent street clashes.
Evidence
A ring of 300 New York policemen protected the Garden. Exceeding the Fillmore, the scene was a magnet for crazies: KKK, Minutemen, and American Nazis, not to mention gun-packing off-duty cops. Long-haired protestors—some with a sign reading WELCOME TO NEW YORK YOU RACIST BASTARD—taunted the police and attacked a Wallace bus from furthest Long Island, wresting Confederate flags from the Alabaman’s partisans and setting Wallace hats aflame. — J. Hoberman, Everything Is Now, 1331
