Gay male camming collapsed after viewers insisted it stay free
Evidence
In 1996, Timo at DefyMyCategory became the first camguy star. Sean Patrick of the now defunct Seanpatricklive came next. As former camguy star Eric Durchholz explains, “In the beginning, there weren’t that many of us, and gay men were voracious in their appetite.” Unfortunately, the scene quickly fell prey to financial bickering. “Most gay men thought guy-cams should be free,” Durchholz recalls, remembering accusations of “scams, fraud and other such nasty stuff.” Today, reality-based homecamming featuring men exists only in small pockets on the Web. Durchholz explains, “These days, the guy-cam community consists mainly of former or current models or porn stars hanging out at home nude, or in ‘whole house’ situations where a bunch of off-duty frat boys supplement their tuition by hanging out in chat rooms on gay.com.” — Theresa M.
