Functional trust cannot generate itself without imposed initial conditions
Evidence
The first is that even if one accepts with Luhmann (1979) that there are two sorts of trust, one founded on belief, characteristic of the ‘premodern’, and one founded on mutual self-interest and functional interdependence, characteristic of the ‘modern’, it is not clear that these are causally independent of each other. In their different ways, the failures of backward linkage even in high-technology systems, the changes in agricultural practice and political affiliation in northern India, and the developmental successes of South Korea, each suggest that whatever may eventually result, a self-reinforcing and functional trust may not be able to generate itself, but may require something analogous to an ‘aristocracy’ to impose the initial conditions of its generation. — Diego Gambetta, Trust - Making and Breaking Cooperative…, 1665
Categorization
- XREF: Directly builds on the reader’s goal: this mirrors how the doctor’s wife in Saramago imposes initial conditions of order when sightedness (observability) collapses. Also engages Luhmann’s two-type trust distinction. — connects to: Trust cannot be induced at will and breaks down when instrumentality is detected; Readiness to trust itself varies and is not a fixed precondition; Trust only arises where opportunistic behavior is genuinely possible (+2 more)
- DEFINE: Defines Luhmann’s two trust types — belief-founded (premodern) vs. mutual self-interest/functional (modern) — and contests their causal independence.
- corroborated: 2 independent passages support this claim — Diego Gambetta, Trust - Making and Breaking Cooperative…, 1665
