Fromm regarded revolutionary political views as a modern analogue to early Christian millenarianism
Evidence
When Fromm undertook an investigation of the relation between the objective situation, the psychic structure and the political convictions of workers, it might be considered that he saw Marxist and socialist views as a modern equivalent of the revolutionary religious ideas of the first Christians. In his book on The Foundations of Christianity, Kautsky had said of the early Christians that `The class hatred of the modern proletariat has hardly ever reached the same heights as that of the Christian proletariat.’ But did this analogy not also imply that the holding of revolutionary views was a substitute for engaging in revolutionary struggle? — Rolf Wiggershaus, The Frankfurt School, 228
Categorization
- QUESTION: This analogy — revolutionary conviction as substitute for revolutionary action — is a striking premise worth chasing in Fromm’s actual writings on the Frankfurt working-class study.
