Fromm’s 1941 Escape from Freedom fulfilled a study the Institute had planned in 1938.

Evidence

Escape from Freedom was published in 1941. It represented the psychological study of `Man in the Authoritarian State’ which had been listed as part of the research programme in the Institute’s prospectus of 1938. Fromm had worked on the book between 1936 and 1940, and it was one of the few occasions on which the Institute’s extensive programme of publications actually bore fruit. — Rolf Wiggershaus, The Frankfurt School, 294
