French republican ideology in the colonies mirrored and shaped domestic Third Republic politics
Evidence
The changes in French ideology, however, naturally reflected-and helped reinforce-trends within l’hexagone as much as they did de- velopments within colonial West Africa. Along with documenting the unstable nature of French ideology, I explore what the shifting parameters of the civilizing mission in West Africa can tell us about the evolution of the Third Republic during the crucial transition from the Belle Epoque to the 1920’s. The most important metropol- itan trend to shape the mission civilisatrice in West Africa between r 89 5 and r 9 30 was the persistence of a certain liberal republican vi- sion among France’s governing elite before World War I and its de- cline after the war. — Alice L.
