Freire’s thought shifted from liberal developmentalism to Marxist humanism
Evidence
Whereas his first book, Education as the Practice of Freedom, is largely informed by a liberal developmentalist point of view, we see in Pedagogy of the Oppressed how Freire’s thought has evolved, which is filtered through with Marxist humanism (Holst, 2006). Freire explores the exploitive nature of political and social systems, making the distinction between the notion of humanization and dehumanization, denouncing oppression of any kind and simultaneously announcing ways in which the oppressed can move to a critical consciousness space through the cultivation of a democratizing climate (Roberts, 2000). — James D.
