Freire’s pedagogy grew directly from his own experience of poverty and hunger
Evidence
Any discussion of Paulo Freire must begin with a look at his roots. Freire grew up in Brazil and because of the Great Depression he lived most of his life in abject poverty, knowing hunger and pain. He fell far behind in school and acknowledged that poverty and hunger affected his ability to learn. Because of his experiences growing up and spending much time with families who were poor and living in rural areas, Freire dedicated himself to searching for ways to help the poor and oppressed (Freire, 1994a; Gadotti, 1994). — James D.
