Freire’s legacy became a target of Brazil’s Bolsonaro regime

Evidence

In life and after, Paulo became an icon of democratic opposition, so much so that in Brazil now he is once again targeted, this time by the rightwing regime of President Jair Bolsonaro. Freire’s stand against autocrats and juntas derives from his faith that a better world is possible, one that enables us to become more fully human. That faith has appealed to several generations who informally comprise what I call a global party of hope and resistance. — James D. Kirylo (ed.), Reinventing Pedagogy of the Oppressed, 46

Categorization

  • XREF: Connects to the broader pattern of posthumous ideological figures being weaponized by successor regimes, as seen in Ambedkar’s posthumous glorification in Annihilation of Caste.
  • QUESTION: Which specific mechanisms did the Bolsonaro regime use to attack Freire’s legacy, and did the attacks actually increase his posthumous salience?
