Free speech framing converts anti-Muslim cartoon racism into a covert liberal form
Evidence
When racism is framed in terms of “free speech” and democratic rights, it becomes a covert liberal form of racism, which erases the humanity of those being subjected to what is in reality hate speech. Few, if any, compared the Jyllands-Posten and Charlie Hebdo cartoons to the racist caricatures of Jews in Germany in the lead-up to the Nazi genocide. Dehumanizing speech, I argued, has real consequences for oppressed groups. Another argument I took up was that in the supposedly “post-racial” world, “equal opportunity” humor was acceptable. It is assumed that all groups can be subjected to ridicule in the name of comedy because racism doesn’t exist in any real way in our “postracial” world; thus, poking fun at all implies neutrality. As I wrote back then, “there is no neutral point in a world characterized by racism, wars, and imperialism—you are either on the side of the oppressed or the oppressor.” — Deepa Kumar, Islamophobia and the Politics of Empire, 71
