Franz Neumann’s 1923 dissertation CV opened by declaring his Jewish identity.

Evidence

Neumann began the curriculum vitae accompanying his 1923 doctoral dissertation in law with the words: `I, Franz Leopold Neumann, was born on 23 May 1900 in Kattowitz. I am a Jew.’ He was born the son of a Jewish manual worker and shopkeeper in Kattowitz in Silesia [now Katowice in Poland], which at that time was part of Germany. — Rolf Wiggershaus, The Frankfurt School, 921

  • XREF: The CV opening with ‘I am a Jew’ echoes the self-identifying opening lines in the library’s novels, particularly The Reluctant Fundamentalist; also connects to Weinstein’s analysis of Jewish identity in scholarship.
