Franciscan martyrs deliberately provoked Muslims to obtain their own deaths
Evidence
These texts, like other contemporary Franciscan texts, have little to say about Islam, contenting themselves with a schematic, stereotypical portrayal of infidel rulers who persecute Christians. Yet after accounting for hagiographical excess, there is no reason to doubt the veracity of the narrative. The five friars, close associates of Francis, wished to lead their apostolic life to its logical, glorious conclusion: martyrdom at the hands of the infidel. It took them quite an effort to obtain it. Despite repeated affronts to Muslim law (entering a mosque, preaching apostasy, insulting the Prophet and the Koran), the Almohad authorities of Seville and Marrakesh respond mildly: imprisonment, banishment. Only after repeated and deliberate provocation does the caliph finally give them what they are looking for, the crown of martyrdom. — John V. Tolan, Saracens, 1106
Categorization
- XREF: Connects directly to vault claims on the Islam-West opposition — here the medieval Christian martyr narrative deliberately manufactures the persecution it then deploys as proof of Muslim cruelty.
- ADDENDUM: Supports the sacrifice article’s ‘Lindow Man’ frame of victims as willing participants in their own ritualized death, transposed into a religious-martyrdom dynamic.
