France punished Guinea by cutting veterans’ pensions and aid.

Evidence

The new state was quickly recognised by Kwame Nkrumah’s Ghana, which had obtained independence the year before, the Soviet Union and Egypt. France did not recognise it until January 1959. Meanwhile, it repatriated all its personnel, ended its budgetary assistance and ceased the pension payments to the 20,000 Guinean veterans who had fought for France. It also unsuccessfully attempted to block Guinea’s entry into the United Nations. — Fanny Pigeaud_ Ndongo Samba Sylla, Africa’s Last Colonial Currency, 150
