Forcing the Moriscos to abandon Moorish dress was a deliberate assimilation strategy

Evidence

Spain undertook certain measures to put a stop to this, among others there was the decision of Queen Juana, daughter of the Catholic Monarchs, who commanded that they should abandon their Moorish dress, because she could see how effective this would be in making them forget that they were Moors. She gave them six years to wear out the clothes they already had made, and then another ten years went in dissimulation, but finally in 1518 the Emperor Charles when he came to reign in Castile, commanded that the ban should be applied, although that same year at the supplication of the Moriscos he suspended it during his good pleasure. — L.
