Forced missionary attendance can seed genuine cross-religious spiritual affinity
Evidence
One purely hypothetical explanation for these textual parallels is that the Young Man, when obliged to attend missionary sermons, may have been attracted by aspects of the teachings of Thomas `a Kempis. Presumably the antidoctrinaire spirit of this style of direct piety, the devotio moderna, based as it was on the cultivation of spiritual inwardness, was what the Young Man found acceptable, but its Christian outer forms he naturally rejected. — L. P. Harvey, Muslims in Spain, 1500 to 1614, 825

- QUESTION: Harvey presents this only as hypothetical — but is there any record of Moriscos converting to sympathetic Christian devotional pietism out of affinity rather than fear?
