Forced-choice testing cancels listener response criterion effects in threshold estimation
Evidence
It is uncommon to use a yes/no paradigm and a signal detection theory framework when an estimate of threshold is desired. Consequently, a number of strategies can be taken by an experimenter to ensure that listeners adopt neutral criteria. In the research realm, the forced-choice paradigm is extremely popular, as the criterion will be applied to both observation intervals and is effectively canceled out. — Jennifer Lentz, Psychoacoustics- Perception of Normal…, 341
