For hearing-impaired viewers, unclear dialogue makes a movie unenjoyable

Evidence

When we come to ratings of “enjoyment” the hearing-impaired again told us that if the dialogue is not clear, then the movie is not enjoyable. Those listeners with normal hearing had trouble with this category, because variations in the ratings were high, and differences between the averaged ratings shown here are not statistically reliable. To the extent that they have meaning, it is interesting that these listeners entered any votes for turning the L and R channels down. But, they did. — Toole, Floyd E, Sound reproduction- the acoustics and…, 1911
