Folk psychology and theory of mind overlap without being interchangeable or opposed.
Evidence
In this way, folk psychology is both broader and narrower than theory of mind. Folk beliefs are broader in the sense that it incorporates not only cognitive (theory of mind-like) explanations of behavior but also potentially those that rely on motivational or strictly behaviorist explanations. Yet the folk psychology perspective is narrow in the sense that it does not adequately address the scientifically identified psychological processes of mind reading—including automatic processes (Dijksterhuis, 2010; Morris & Mason, 2009; Reeder, 2009b). For this reason, theory of mind and folk psychology are neither interchangeable nor opposing concepts. — Roderick M. Kramer, Geoffrey J. Leonardelli, Robert W.
