Financialized Hollywood reproduces platform rent extraction across cinema and streaming

Evidence

Nearly twenty years later, our world of AdTech and surveillance capitalism has woven a much darker web. Presaged and promoted by the brandscape blockbuster, our corporate metaverse is here, overlaid on our physical reality by the screens in our theaters and in our pockets. The opportunities for independence and radical thought in the cultural sphere have faded, just another piece of content drowned out by brands in an endless scroll. Compelled by hedge funds and asset managers that drive the cultural industries toward more and more extraction, Disney, Warner Bros., Spielberg, and the rest of financialized Hollywood are pursuing their own version of flooding the zone with shit. Generative artificial intelligence trained on corporate IP threatens further repetition and degradation while lowering labor costs. Monotonous stories woven together with empty references to some other desolate entry in the corporate canon. Lots of content, but little creativity or criticism. A slowly rising streaming subscription charge, with an extra fee for skipping ads, will be withdrawn each month in rent. — Andrew deWaard, Derivative Media, 452

  • XREF: The ‘flooding the zone’ and rent-extraction logic directly parallels Milgrom’s analysis of how institutional/financial incentives shape the character of exchange — here applied to cultural production.
  • SEED: Angle: trace how hedge-fund ownership of Hollywood studios produces the observable formal feature of IP-nostalgia crossover — the causal chain from private equity to the multiverse plot.
  • DEEPTHINKING: The final image — cinema and streaming as dual rent-collection points over an audience already given nothing — condenses the whole financialized-culture thesis into a single damning picture.
