Filter bank models outperform DFT in mimicking auditory temporal resolution

Evidence

The fundamental problem in the above-mentioned simple psychoacoustic models is their inability to emulate the temporal resolution and dynamics of the auditory system. As mentioned previously, this problem originates from the use of fixed-length time frames in the DFT computation, the length of which defines the temporal resolution of such a model. The time– frequency resolution of hearing can be emulated more accurately with filter bank models that process the signals with a set of band-pass filters in the time domain. — Ville Pulkki, Matti Karjalainen, Communication Acoustics- An…, 1605
