Fashion is a major but academically neglected site of racial othering

Evidence

The role of racial and ethnic imagery in fashion industries across the globe has become a pervasive symbol of our times. The role of fashion in shaping our images of movement, migration, and cultural exchange has become an important mechanism for the representation of racial and ethnic otherness in contemporary societies. As Gargi Bhattacharyya argues in her contribution, however, this has not been reflected in much of the academic discourse about the meanings of race and ethnicity. Bhattacharyva undertakes to fill the gap. — David Theo Goldberg, John Solomos, A Companion to Racial and Ethnic Studies, 2606
