Facebook served as a vector for state-driven ethnic violence in Myanmar
Evidence
In developing countries, the arrival of the internet had darker consequences. In 2016, Myanmar’s military exploited Facebook to incite violence against the Muslim Rohingya minority, creating fake accounts to spread propaganda and stoke fear. The resulting ethnic cleansing killed twenty-five thousand and displaced over a million. In India, viral WhatsApp rumors about child abductions led to mob lynchings. For Facebook, the solution to these problems was more technology. The company launched a $50,000 contest to find technological fixes for misinformation on WhatsApp. — W. David Marx, Blank Space, 500
