Exposure to the transformed Heimat eroded commitments to territorial revisionism

Evidence

Because images from the Heimat transformed exhibited the clearest possible evidence that present-day Silesia was out of sync with memory, slideshows prompted some viewers to explicitly reject the political agenda for territorial revisionism as impractical, even reprehensible. At a well-attended gathering of expellees from Liegnitz in Nuremberg in 1965, the participants undertook a “stroll through the Liegnitz of the present” amid much commentary and discussion. As one attendee recalled, the i rst image appeared, and everyone “hushed”: “After this tense moment, every viewer began to feel rel ective and melancholic thoughts about the pictures. Rel ective, because the slides relate the recognition that the picture of our Heimat city, which we carry inside of us, is truly faded in reality and has changed considerably, so that we are ever more reliant on the inner image in memory that we took with us from back home.” The experience led him to reach new insights about the absurdity of territorial revisionism: “This slide presentation, most notably its sober and evocative commentary, expressed in all forcefulness that we expellees are not revanchists. But no one can ever refuse us the right to speak about our Heimat and to think about it.” — Andrew Demshuk, The Lost German East, 1091
