Expelled Moriscos could export goods but not cash or valuables

Evidence

— L. P. Harvey, Muslims in Spain, 1500 to 1614, 1883

Categorization

  • SEED: The expulsion decree’s restrictions — allowing merchandise but banning coin, gold, silver, jewelry, and bills of exchange — show how the crown confiscated Morisco wealth through monetary policy rather than outright seizure. Could be an article on how exile regimes control the form (not just the fact) of wealth transfer.
  • DEFINE: “Crimen de lesa Magestad divina y humana” — the legal charge of treason against both divine and human majesty, the framework under which the crown justified confiscation.
